<p style="text-align: left;">And there&#8217;s a continuous soundtrack of the music for which he designed, from Cressida to Costello, from Hawkwind to The Damned, from Iggy Pop &amp; James Williamson to Red Dirt.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">In the entrance to Chelsea Space is selected ephemera &#8211; adverts, badges, music press ads, stickers &#8211; as well as books, magazines and other finished artwork and designs, including the rug made in the image of a panel on the cover of Brewing Up With Billy Bragg.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">There is also a showreel of 10 of the videos directed by Bubbles (including two never publicly displayed before: Incendiary Device and Darling, Let&#8217;s Have Another Baby for Johnny Moped).</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">A face-off is conducted between Elvis Costello (in 1977&#8217;s Warholian 60&#8243; x 40&#8243; Live Stiffs poster) and Chuck Berry (in the form of the wall-mounted sculpture created by Bubbles for music publisher Peter Barnes) at each end of the ramp.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">On the ramp wall are posters, sleeves and other exhibits denoting approaches, recurrent themes and areas such as art direction, colour usage, application of symbols, photographic treatment, geometric arrangement, etc.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">In the main room there is no finished artwork, excepting a copy of Damned Damned Damned with it&#8217;s <a href="http://www.barneybubbles.com/blog/archives/2956" target="_blank">deliberate printing error</a>, and  an <a href="http://www.barneybubbles.com/blog/archives/4" target="_blank">NME Book Of Modern Music</a> to demonstrate from whence Bubbles was taking his  design leads at the time of production.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Sketches and proposals, along with personal effects, influences, paintings and sketchbooks rest on plinths and trestles colour-schemed to a typically exuberant Bubbles palette.</p>

<p>However, courtesy of Barney Bubbles&#8217; designs, Callow&#8217;s hands <span style="text-decoration: underline;">did</span> appear on both sides of the sleeve of Moped&#8217;s 1978 Chiswick single <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Queenie/dp/B001QLK4E4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dmusic&amp;qid=1273826126&amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank">Little Queenie</a>.</p>

<p>The shot &#8211; as revealed last night by photographer <a href="http://www.briangriffin.co.uk/" target="_blank">Brian Griffin</a> at a <a href="http://www.mcsaatchi.com/" target="_blank">M&amp;C Saatchi</a> talk organised by his friend, creative director <a href="http://www.creativepool.co.uk/employee/content.php?url=graham-fink-mc-saatchi" target="_blank">Graham Fink</a> &#8211; was taken during BG&#8217;s Expressionist experiments which resulted in the intriguing self-published collaboration with Barney, <a href="http://www.barneybubbles.com/blog/for-sale-original-artworks-by-brian-g-and-barney-b" target="_blank">Copyright 1978.</a></p>

<p>Callow, at that time an actor on the rise (and these days also a director, author and fine <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/apr/03/ambrose-gay-icons-simon-callow" target="_blank">book reviewer</a>), was one of BG&#8217;s models.</p>
<p>Having decorated them with barbed wire for Moped, Callow&#8217;s hands channeled the creative energy source in Barney&#8217;s design for the <a href="http://rockpopfashion.com/blog/?p=101" target="_blank">Derek Boshier</a>-curated group exhibition Lives at <a href="http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/venues/hayward-gallery" target="_blank">The Hayward</a> in 1979.</p>

<p>During his illuminating presentation, BG also revealed that Barney&#8217;s frontispiece portrait for his 1981 book Power was intended as the cover, an idea rejected by the publisher (who relented for the paperback issue in 1984).</p>
<p>&#8220;Barney made part of my nose and face out of the numerals &#8216;71&#8242;,&#8221; said BG. &#8220;He thought that was when I started as a professional photographer; in fact it was the following year. The figure next to me, pointing to the future, is supposed to be my boss telling me to get out there and start working.&#8221;</p>

<p>BG has often mentioned that he first came across Barney&#8217;s work via his enigmatic illustrations for the <a href="http://www.barneybubbles.com/blog/archives/3362" target="_blank">NME</a>. Above is an example for the music paper&#8217;s letter&#8217;s  page.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s a great comment on the increasingly tribal aspects to pop fandom in the early 80s, and is made extra special by the fact that it carries a credit, something the limelight-shy Barney was avoiding at all costs by this stage.</p>
<p>The increasingly rare originals of BG&#8217;s collaborations with Barney are available <a href="http://www.barneybubbles.com/blog/for-sale-original-artworks-by-brian-g-and-barney-b" target="_blank">here</a> though, as BG pointed out last night, Power now commands a staggering <a href="http://www.antiqbook.com/books/bookinfo.phtml?nr=1200101549&amp;l=en&amp;searchform=" target="_blank">£400 price tag</a>.</p>

<p>Barney&#8217;s single sleeves comply, though, of course, he added the particular characteristic of anonymity. Only one sleeve carries a credit &#8211; for the lettering above Humphrey Ocean&#8217;s portrait on <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Englands-Glory/dp/B001OQUGTY/ref=sr_f2_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dmusic&amp;qid=1246869994&amp;sr=102-2" target="_blank">England&#8217;s Glory</a>/<a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dream-Tobacco/dp/B001OR1G24/ref=sr_f2_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dmusic&amp;qid=1246869994&amp;sr=102-3" target="_blank">Dream Tobacco</a> by Max Wall (apparently at the insistence of the <a href="http://www.maxwall.org/">late comic genius</a>).</p>

<p>More will be added over the coming months; just last night at the <a href="http://www.nonesuch.com/journal/ry-cooder-and-nick-lowe-to-tour-europe-this-summer-2009-03-03" target="_blank">Nick Lowe/Ry Cooder</a> aftershow, Soft Boys&#8217; leader <a href="http://www.robynhitchcock.com/" target="_blank">Robyn Hitchcock</a> confirmed what had long been posited: Barney was responsible for his band&#8217;s 1978 Radar single (I Want To Be An) Anglepoise Lamp/Fat Man&#8217;s Son.</p>

<p>In the days when hit singles sold in their hundreds of thousands, Barney (who majored in cardboard design for retail purposes at college) almost single-handedly ignited the explosion of 45rpm packaging as it came back into vogue.</p>

<p>Eager to address the problem-solving possibilities offered by multiple releases and coloured vinyl, Barney produced at an impressive rate, with few, if any, falling below the high quality threshold.</p>

<p>The mask of anonymity eased adoption of a dizzying array of styles and approaches. Yet themes, symbols, fonts and techniques recur and develop: hearts, arrows, stars, tears, physiognomy, dynamic use of colour, art history references, industry in-jokes, photographic treatments and so on.</p>
<p>Some contain elements contributed by others; obviously the images of the photographers with whom he worked, and also releases such as Accidents Will Happen, where Barney applied the concept of inverting the sleeve.  The stills which ended up on the inside came from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8JkB-OR7H4" target="_blank">the promo for the song</a> made by <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Computer-Graphics-Annabel-Jankel/dp/0521262518/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1246870337&amp;sr=1-1" target="_blank">Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel</a>. Designs for earlier releases, such as <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Pie/dp/B001I8Z3PA/ref=sr_f2_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dmusic&amp;qid=1246870425&amp;sr=102-1" target="_blank">The Pie</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silver-Machine-Original-Single-Version/dp/B0022YAVBA/ref=sr_f2_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dmusic&amp;qid=1246870451&amp;sr=102-1" target="_blank">Silver Machine</a>, were completed by record companies out of artwork he had already created for albums or posters.</p>

<p>We start with the folded paper sleeve for the Christmas message of 1966 Barney recorded in a railway station auto recording booth for family and a few friends and move on to big sellers such as <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hit-Your-Rhythm-Stick-Explicit/dp/B001TN3RAC/ref=sr_f2_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dmusic&amp;qid=1246870510&amp;sr=102-1" target="_blank">Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick</a>, which reached number one and spent 15 weeks in the UK chart.</p>

<p>With the invaluable support and assistance of Howies mainmen <a href="http://www.brunel200.com/legacy/bristol_arts_projects/nick_hand.htm">Nick Hand</a> (who also took these photos) and<a href="http://www.howies.co.uk/content.php?xId=392&amp;id=1715&amp;viewblog=1715" target="_blank"> Tim March</a>, we mounted a mini-display in a hitherto unused upstairs room as the first in a series of monthly events the guys are organising.</p>
<p>The core of our little taster was a collection of 24 of the 27 variations to the cover of Do It Yourself by Ian Dury &amp; The Blockheads.</p>

<p>This seemed particularly appropriate since the site was once occupied by a Laura Ashley branch; some of the walls in the until-now disused upstairs space are still covered in her divinely daft and dated flowery wallpaper.</p>

<p>To keep the ID/BB theme going, we also displayed original artefacts and artwork, including the paste-up for what later became the cover of Ian&#8217;s 1984 album <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/4000-Weeks-Holiday-Ian-Dury/dp/B000QUCY62/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1234042935&amp;sr=1-1" target="_blank">4000 Weeks Holiday</a>.</p>
<p>Thought to be among the very last projects Barney worked on, this has been contributed to the Reasons archive by our friend <a href="http://www.mightyspirit.com/journey/journey.html" target="_blank">Pauline Kennedy</a>. In her previous incarnation as Caramel Crunch, Pauline was Barney&#8217;s assistant and continued his work at such labels as <a href="http://www.discogs.com/label/Go!+Discs" target="_blank">Go! Discs</a>.</p>

<p>With a book signing and talk about Barney, complete with power-point presentation of images from the book, the evening was capped by Paul and Caz mixing up the aural medicine with DJ sets of Barney-related sounds. These, we&#8217;re happy to tell you, went down a storm.</p>
