OK so, for the show, the Lower Space and Ramp of Chelsea Space will exhibit finished artwork and ephemera.
Once you enter the main room – the Upper Space – there will be examples of all of the stages and methods of production: inspiration and influences, references, paste-ups, PMTs, proofs, sketches, art-books, equipment, etc.
Today we embarked on installing the wall-mounted sculpture of Chuck Berry (contributed by music publisher Peter Barnes) at the far end of the Ramp.

Today the title of the show in vinyl lettering was installed on the exterior by Ian Harris. It looks pretty classy.

We’re having to lavish much care and attention on some of the precious items contributed to the show.

Here,  Barney Bubbles’ artwork for Dave Edmunds’ 1981 album Twangin… is checked over by Chelsea Space director Donald Smith. The poster paint-on-card cover is held by long-gone/yellowed Sellotape to a 14″ x 28″sheet with pencil instructions for the back of the sleeve and a couple of sketched options in thumbnail boxes.

The Iitala window display is shipping out on Monday. It’s been great to work amid such beautifully crafted objects.

As part of the installation of the Barney Bubbles exhibition we’ve been sorting through some of the personal items – sketches, drawings, working paintings, photography – as well as art equipment, letterheads, business correspondence etc.

And the International Herald Tribune’s design critic Alice Rawsthorn had some nice things to say about Process on the Robert Elms show on BBC Radio London yesterday. Catch her 36.00 minutes into this (warning – may not work in the US).

Process – exhibition diary: Day 1

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

And so it begins. We’re underway with the installation of the exhibition, which opens on September 14 at London’s Chelsea Space.

At a glance this looks like a random collection of album sleeves, posters, equipment and ephemera, but in fact represents a tiny sample of the fantastic contributions we have received, including some extraordinary and exciting items.

Over the next two weeks as well as the regular blogposts we’ll keep you updated daily on the show’s progress with snapshots and inside insights.
